My Body, My Home

Solo Exhibition by M

Exhibition Proposal

'My Body, My Home' is a solo exhibition that explores the intricacies of the human body. The exhibition aims to unite our inner and outer worlds and ultimately promote acceptance of humanity. Developing the capacity to acknowledge and embrace the darkest or less desirable aspects of ourselves and others is crucial. In my personal journey, I've witnessed profound transformations by adopting this approach. As a child, I absorbed the belief that lying and manipulation were not just acceptable but essential for survival. Consequently, throughout my childhood and into my late teens, I engaged in these behaviors without considering their impact on others. It took years of therapy, holistic healing, and self-education to develop empathy for myself, which ultimately enabled me to extend that empathy to others. Through this journey, I learned that self-acceptance cannot be forced through self-hatred. This exhibition delves into the aspects of humanity typically concealed, aiming to illuminate them with a spirit of acceptance and compassion. It lays bare the human body and societal taboos, including menstruation, bodily functions, and other subjects deemed uncomfortable. By challenging the stigma surrounding these topics, I aim to embrace every facet of myself and encourage others to do the same.

M communicates through various mediums such as photography, painting, performance art, video installation, and fashion. This collection utilizes the interplay of delicate and grotesque symbolism to lead viewers into a visceral exploration of their own bodily sensations. By doing so, it aims to illuminate emotions that may have otherwise remained overlooked or concealed. In doing so, the viewer is able to confront the entire spectrum of self.

The exhibit will include the following pieces, designed to fit the space:

  • A painting

  • A 4x4 make-shift room with 4 photographs covering each wall

  • A 4-part photo series on canvas

  • 2 medium-sized photos

  • An interactive piece

  • A video installation

  • A graph that measures the spectrum of validation, rejection and everything in between

  • Opening night will contain a performance art piece

My Body, My Home

Solo Exhibition by M

Exhibition Proposal

My Body, My Home is a solo exhibition exploring the body as both a physical and psychological space—one that holds memory, contradiction, and transformation. The work examines the tension between the inner and outer self, inviting viewers to confront the parts of humanity that are often concealed or stigmatized.

At its core, the exhibition is rooted in self-acceptance. It considers how individuals learn to suppress or distort aspects of themselves in response to environment and survival. Through personal reflection, M draws on a history shaped by learned behaviors such as manipulation and emotional detachment, and the long process of unlearning them through therapy, holistic practices, and self-examination. This shift toward self-empathy becomes the foundation for extending empathy outward.

The exhibition engages with subjects often deemed uncomfortable—menstruation, bodily functions, and other socially taboo experiences—presenting them without censorship. By bringing these realities into focus, the work challenges cultural stigmas and reframes the body not as something to conceal, but as something to understand and accept in its entirety.

Working across photography, painting, performance, video installation, and fashion, M employs a visual language that moves between the delicate and the grotesque. This contrast creates a visceral experience, encouraging viewers to become aware of their own physical and emotional responses. In doing so, the work opens space for confrontation, recognition, and, ultimately, acceptance of the full spectrum of self.
